What are HR policies and procedures?

HR policies and procedures are the written rules and processes that guide how a business manages its people. Policies set out expectations, such as conduct, leave and flexible work, while procedures explain the steps to follow, such as how to raise a grievance or request leave.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most.

Ask your own →
Which policies does every business need?
Most need a code of conduct, bullying and harassment, leave, work health and safety, and a grievance process at minimum.
Are policies legally required?
Some are effectively required to meet your obligations, such as preventing harassment and managing safety. Others are good practice.
Can you update our existing policies?
Yes. We review what you have and update or rewrite where needed.
Should policies be part of employment contracts?
Usually not. Keeping them separate lets you update policies without changing contracts.
Do you help roll them out?
Yes. We can brief managers and staff so everyone understands the changes.
How often should policies be reviewed?
Whenever laws change, and as part of a regular review cycle.
